Solidarity with Activists of Jeju IslandMay 9, 2012

Xan Joi's report back:
Our protest in solidarity with and support for the activists of Jeju Island, South Korea, fighting U.S. military imperialism and industrial complex, began with a march from the Civic Center BART about 5 blocks to the Korean Consulate.
We quickly realized our large "SAVE Jeju Island" banner was being interpreted by the hasty glance of some folks as something to do with "Jesus"!
We also realized that not one person we met along the march - or in front of the consulate - knew where Jeju Island was, let alone that the US military is attempting to construct yet another military base there. BUT people were quite adamant in their stance with us AGAINST yet another military base for ANY reason!
About 20 of us assembled in front of the consulate, held banners and posters, handed out flyers, and engaged with passers-by AND with consulate employees about this struggle. We were also joined by two people who came down from Santa Rosa, one activist who is actually from Jeju Island visiting here in the U.S.
The police greeted us in the beginning but soon left. The private security attempted to instruct us to leave but we informed him of our constitutional rights, and he also acquiesced.
For the protest finale, we entered the building, took the elevator up to the third floor where the consulate has it's offices, and attempted to speak with the Consul General or any of his staff.
We were told that they had all left the building and were in a secret meeting at a secret location! We left contact information and were promised his secretary would arrange a meeting with him in the near future!
