Protesting 10 Years of Guantanamo

January 11, 2012

Oakland, CA
Bay Area CODEPINK joined hundreds of activists to mark the 10th anniversary of the opening of the US detention/torture site in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in front of the federal building in San Francisco, CA. This was one of hundreds of events around the country and the world to close Guantanamo.

Cynthia Papermaster was the emcee for the SF rally and represented CODEPINK among the featured speakers. Other speakers included members of Amnesty International, World Cant Wait, War Resisters League, and other peace and human rights groups. The rally also featured a musical performance by David Rovics. See video for highlights of the rally.

After the rally, hundreds of activists, many dressed in orange jumpsuits for this demonstration, formed a human chain. The names of all 171 detainees still being held at Guantanamo were each read out loud. After each name was read, a gong was sounded. The line of activists stretched down the block and across the street to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
