Jewish Voice for Peace TIAA CREF ProtestJuly 19, 2011
CODEPINK Washington DC
Last week CODEPINK DC attended the Jewish Voice for Peace DC Chapter rally to protest TIAA CREF’s investments in human rights violations. A couple dozen people from around the DC area turned out to the protest, which was in solidarity with the one taking place in Charlotte, North Carolina, where TIAA CREF was holding its annual meeting. TIAA CREF is a pension fund which is invested in several companies profiting from the illegal occupation of Palestine, such as Catepillar, Motorola, Veolia, and several more. In a divestment campaign spearheaded by Jewish Voice for Peace, shareholders and other TIAA CREF members have organized to repeatedly asked TIAA CREF to divest immediately from these specific companies until Israel complies with international law. TIAA CREF has thus far ignored our requests, so we are continuing to apply pressure.
It was a spirited rally with someone on the electric keyboard, another person playing drums, and lots of singing and chanting. We had great visuals and lots of fliers to hand out to people walking by, specifically some attendees of the nearby Christians United for Israel (CUFI) conference. Our spirit was bolstered even more by reports of successful demonstrations around the same cause taking place across the country.
