Arresting Rove in Sacramento

May 10, 2010
CODEPINK
Sacramento, CA
Well, we failed at putting the cuffs on Rove and having him hauled off to jail. But four CODEPINKers gave it our best effort at a book signing event at Borders in Sacramento. Janine was total theater at it. For a third time, she tried to slip the cuffs around his wrist. The private security escorted her out and cuffed her with her own cuffs! Once outside, the cops had a confused moment when they couldn't figure out how to unlock the cuffs (the keys were hanging from the cuffs). A representative for the ACLU proceeded to question the cops on their unlawful use of force in escorting Janine out of the bookstore. Unfortunately, the Young Republicans recognized two of us and tipped off security. We were asked if we were with CODEPINK. We remained in line. Nancy fumbled to open a pink war criminal sign. It was ripped out of her hands by security. She looked Rove in the eye and called him a war criminal. He seemed surprised. Within seconds she was hauled out by security, but not after filling the store with shouts of "Karl Rove is war criminal." Rae was up next to bat. She unfurled a banner that said "Arrest Rove! War Criminal!" and was ejected while loudly calling for Rove's arrest. Security made Victoria turn off the flip cam she was using to try to document the action. A handful of local activists were also in attendance with stealth banners that were not unfurled. They gave support after the action was over. There was also an evening protest of Rove outside a Republican fundraiser in Sac.
