Palestine Freedom Riders, LA
Tuesday, November 15th 2011  Gather at 3:00 pm
Los Angeles, CA

Ride against Israeli Apartheid and occupation of Palestine. Join in a solidarity action with the Palestine Freedom Riders!

On November 15th, activists from the March 15th Palestinian Youth Movement will attempt to board segregated Jewish-only settler buses bound for Jerusalem as an act of civil disobedience.

Worldwide activists are mobilizing to shine a light on Israel's repressive tactics and show solidarity for Palestinian popular resistance.

Please send me an e-mail (kristen[at] if you would like to take part in Los Angeles's unique and exciting local action in solidarity with the Palestine Freedom Riders on November 15th.

Events in the US are being coordinated by Jewish Voice for Peace along with CODEPINK and other groups.

We will begin gathering and leafleting @ 3:00 pm and take off on our Freedom Ride at 4:00. We will go until 6:00 (or later for those who want to stay).

Background for Action: This action is in solidarity with a group of young Palestinians, who will be attempting to challenge the segregated/apartheid transportation system in the West Bank/East Jerusalem. They have modeled their action on the Freedom Riders of the US Civil Rights era. Veolia has been a major player in the Israeli system as well as having many transportation and municipal contracts here in Los Angeles and throughout the United States. Some of the Palestinian Freedom Riders will be doing their rides on Veolia run buses.

Our Action: We will be riding on Downtown Veolia operated DASH buses from 4pm - 6pm on Tues. November 15 in solidarity with the Palestinian Freedom Ride. We will pass out informational flyers, and spread awareness of the Civil Rights Fight the Palestinians are engaged in.

Meeting Spot: We will meet on the lawn at the S.E. corner of 1st & Los Angeles Streets in Downtown LA.

Veolia Run DASH Lines: 3 of the DASH lines (A,B & D) are accessible within 1.5 blocks of our meeting spot and the 2 others are within walking distance.

Map Here:

Action Day Schedule: 3:00 - 3:30pm Press Conf. / Availability
3:30 - 4:00pm Pass Out Flyers, Review Messaging, Safety and Best Practices, Split up into Teams
4:00 - 6:00pm Ride Busses
6:00pm Those who can stay longer will re-gather at the meeting spot and debrief about the action.

Our Basic Messaging: Freedom of Movement, Access to Jerusalem, Civil Rights Legacy, Equality, Separate is not Equal, Veolia's role in the occupation, etc.

Discussion Points: We will ride the Dash busses in an attempt to have conversations with riders about the Palestinian Freedom Riders and their attempt to board segregated Israeli public transportation headed from inside the West Bank to occupied East Jerusalem in an act of civil disobedience inspired by the Freedom Riders of the U.S. Civil Rights movement in defiance of the Jim Crow South. Targeting Veolia references Los Angeles's solidarity with the international anti-Apartheid Movement (South Africa) in the 1980's and ties it to the non-violent BDS movement called by Palestinian civil society in 2004-2005; and Veolia's complicity in the illegal occupation of the Palestinian peoples and lands. The Palestinian struggle for freedom must be understood as part of the continuum of people fighting against unjust oppression.

Things you will need: Quarters! The fares on the DASH buses that we will ride are only $.50. But if you get off and back on another bus, you will have to pay $.50 again, so make sure to bring quarters. Dress warmly- much of our action will be after sunset.

Documentation: We will be looking to assign specific people to do photography and videography of action. Please let us know if you are interested in being on that team.

Participation Outreach and Recruitment: The larger our turnout, the more successful our action will be. We encourage everyone to take the time to make a few calls to your activist circle and encourage them to join in what we hope will be the first of a succession of historic Solidarity Rides with the Palestinian Freedom Riders.

We will meet on the lawn at the S.E. corner of 1st & Los Angeles Streets in Downtown LA.
