Pass a City Council Resolution Against Further War Funding!

A City Council Resolution campaign is a great opportunity to build a coalition for peace and social justice in your community. This is a project that will take time and concerted energy, but your community will be stronger as a result-and you may even make national headlines!

Here is a simple guide to encourage your City Council to vote to increase domestic spending while decreasing the Department of Defense budget for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

  • Download the Bring Our War $$ Home template resolution. Edit this template to include your city's specific information. You may also consider adding information about the $3billion in military aid the US gives Israel annually, enabling the occupation of Palestine.

  • Print out a flyer with key points about the effects of military spending on your local budget.
Use the National Priorities Project website to find data outlining the cost of wars to your state, city, county, school district or even zip code. Our editable flier will be a useful outreach tool for your local campaign! It can be edited in Adobe Reader-click here for the latest version.

  • Cities for Progress has the best "how-to pass a city resolution" on progressive causes that we've seen. Take a look at the tools on their site to get your city resolution effort going. They even have great talking points you can edit for your own campaign! NOTE: No matter what the outcome - the resolution passes, is tabled to a later date, fails, or they vote to "pass over" and not consider it until the cows come home - congratulate yourself on your effort and repeat the Bring Our War $$ Home mantra: "This effort has opened a space for this much needed conversation about our national priorities to happen in my community and we are stronger for it! Onward!"
